Established in 2005 by our Director Kevin Turley, the Orkney Group consists of a close-knit team of professionals, comprising: carpenters (Orkney Construction), roofers and waterproofers (Orkney Roofing + Waterproofing), painters (Orkney Painting + Decorating). The name Orkney is a nod to the Orkney Islands. This archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland is where Kevin's forbears built their own lives and legacies before migrating to the Southern Hemisphere isles of New Zealand.

The early days of Orkney were spent buying tired houses and extensively renovating them before on-selling ('flipping homes'). Unfortunately, due to interest rates fluctuating over these early years, Kevin quickly realised that the banks were making more money out of these renovations than Orkney, so he decided to shift the business focus. Orkney now concentrates on clients like you - people seeking craftsmanship and a top-quality finish. Although budgets are still important, it's likely not the only factor influencing your decision-making.

Orkney leadership comprises a dedicated team that pride themselves on developing strong relationships that last long after your project is complete. We are a unique Wellington building company because we can offer you a full A-Z building or renovation service from initial design and architecture planning, right through to the finishing decorating touches! Each individual in our team focuses on delivering work you will feel proud to show off to friends and family.

Conscious of the environmental impact of the construction industry, we are eager to promote and contribute to more sustainable building practices. On all Orkney projects, we strive to make greener choices - this includes recycling leftover materials, burying leftover plasterboard, and using low/no VOC paint products. Kevin's passion for the environment led him to establish 'Green Abode' in 2015. Green Abode is focused on building energy-efficient homes. When Kevin’s long-term love of construction and developments led him to launch Orkney in January 2005, he was able to meld two of his greatest passions – people and business. His natural leadership ability, integrity, and personable nature draw others to work for him and do business with him. He believes that looking after staff and customers is of utmost importance, and this is obvious in the way he runs the company. In his downtime, Kevin’s favourite things to do are spend time with his family and get out into the great outdoors.

Our Office Manager, Sasha Duguid

Born in Bristol in the UK, Sasha moved to New Zealand in 2002. She met her husband while working in IT at Victoria University, and they now live in Porirua with their 3 teenage children. Sasha’s work experience is varied – she has had roles in IT, customer service, and management. Her last role at HazardCo Health and Safety has provided her with some great experience to manage the Health and Safety processes at Orkney and keep the office shipshape. When she’s not working, Sasha is a bit of a dance mum – you’ll often find her at dance competitions at the weekend, and when she’s not watching, she’ll be helping run them.

Our GM for Roofing & Waterproofing, Tama

Originally from Dunedin, Tama has been working in the roofing industry for over 30 years. Throughout his career, he has gained experience in all aspects of the industry, from installation to waterproofing, and architectural consultancy in roofing to general management. He has made significant contributions to various roofing projects in New Zealand and Australia, including the Sydney General Post Office.

Apart from his work, Tama is a passionate food lover and enjoys going to the gym to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Stephen specialises in thorough end-to-end management of all types of painting and decorating systems and has a wealth of knowledge gained over 20+ years in the industry. Originally from Wellington, Stephen has been involved in varied management roles within the construction industry across New Zealand and Australia and has gained excellent experience working on high-end contracts in both countries, including managing large painting and plastering contracts for major projects in the Wellington region. Stephen prides himself on outstanding communication, attention to detail and efficiency, providing the best possible outcome for each client. Outside work, Stephen enjoys spending time with friends and family, including taking walks in the beautiful countryside with his partner and their two dogs.

Our Marketing and Administration Manager, Sheryl Sua

Sheryl’s work history is proof of her adaptable personality: bank receptionist, council secretary, embassy diplomat, and singing teacher (to name a few roles). Having employed Sheryl in a previous company, Kevin was keen to have her on the Orkney team when the Office Administrator position became available; he had experienced first-hand her competence as well as her composure under pressure. Since then, Sheryl has also taken on the role of Marketing which allows her to use her creative flair. Sheryl’s interests are baking, writing, and exploring the countryside with her husband and daughter.

Dianne Daly

Orkney contracts the financial side of the company to Bookkeeper, Dianne, who does an exceptional job of keeping Orkney’s accounts in order. Her 15 years experience in running two successful service and retail businesses stand her in good stead in this demanding role. Outside of work, Dianne likes to spend time with family and friends and has recently joined the E-bike revolution, getting out and about in our beautiful country as well as further afield.
